Clare's life changes in a second when her sister Anne is attacked by her abusive husband. She is visiting Anne and when she tries to protect Anne by hitting her husband, she is send to jail. Her sister doesn't do anything to help her, but agrees to the lie of her husband that Clare was committing assault behind with the kids and with her abusive husbands who keeps abusing her for years.
It's ten years later and Clare is out of prison where she was sentenced for two years. Everything has changed again when she steps outside again: her relationship with her boyfriend, Central Park rangerPaul, for the most: they are breaking as Clare feels she doesn't deserve him. And then Anne's daughter Grit knocks on Clare's front door. Grit has decided she has enough of seeing her mother Anne being abused by Frederik. Clare and Anne haven't spoke for eighteen years later. Who knows what Grit really wants. Why is she there? Where is the rest of the family? With Grit around her, Clare is reminded of the past of Anne and her, she also gets in touch again with Paul amd together they start bird watching in Central Park.
Little Nigh is a bittersweet and mostly very tragic novel about abuse. It was so unfair to read what happens to Clare when she just tries to stand up for her sister and gets 2 years in jail. Overal I though the story was good, but a bit slow at pace, and at some points I just started to lose the interest a little. The characters where well developed. . The book has a nice underlying message about domestic violence, altough domestic violence is just in a small part of the book.My overall rating is 34stars. This was a nice read, but it didn't blow me away.
