Willa's struggling artist mother's paintings sell for a large sum of money, and Willa and her mother move to Paradise Valley, Arizona so that Willa can attend the posh Valley Prep School. Willa doesn’t have a hard time fitting in at Valley Prep, although she does thinks the school is a bit too posh for her, she becomes friends with three of the most popular and wealthy ‘Glitterati’’ girls who own the school; Kelly and Nikki and Cherise. They take her out on shopping trips where they really crash their creditcards and come back with the latest fashion.
But the same week Willa is introduced to three other girls in school Sierra, Mary and Alicia. The three immigrants and at school on a scholarship, and when Willa talks with the three, she starts to see a whole other side of Arizona and really wants to be friends with them. But her three Glitterati friends have a very other opinion about Mary, Alicia and Sierra. They call the three the “Busteds’ who are bussed to school everyday. For Kelly talking about the three in this mean way isn’t enough: she runs The Buzz, a very popular blog and decides to post mean rumors about the three.
When Willa finds out what Nikkie, Kelly and Cherise are posting on the Buzz and get the whole school against the Busteds, she is furious and decides it’s time for action. She comes up with a plan to steal money from Kelly and other rich girls with the intention to buy the most prettiest clothes and a personal tutor for Mary, Alicia and Sierra. With the help of Tre who is a bit of a shady guy who is a specialist in burgling and pickpocketing, she succeeds in her modern Robin Hood Plan. But then the Glitterati are starting to spread more mean rumors about the Busteds, and accuse them of stealing from them. Uh, oh! This wasn’t Willa’s plan? And certainly it wasn’t her plan that her actions are leaking out and she is very, very busted!
Pretty Crooked is the kind of book that makes you laugh out loud! I loved the plot and the main character, Willa: she is so smart and is a little naive in her plan to help out her less fortunate classmates. What was very good was the topic the author mentions in this book: online bullying and how far something like that goes and what the effects can be. And what was going on with Willa's mother? I really liked that side story, but I was a bit bummed that it wasn't revealed in this book, so I definately hope there will be a sequel. I really want to know what is going on with her and who the mistery man she secretly meets (great plan to follow her in a car Willa!). And then there was the love side story; Aiden. He was the main love interest of this book. He was the hot, rich but actually nice guy unlike the rest of the school.
Overall Pretty Crooked is a fresh, fun new and hilarious new YA novel. (release this march) wich I truly hope will be a series, as I just am craving for more!
