The Popularity Papers by Amy Ignatow
Publisher: Amulet Books
Release date: April 2010
Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang are best friends. There is only one problem: they are not popular. And they decide to do something about this, they are going to uncover the secret of being popular! But for we get into this, first something more about Lydia and Julia, the two awesome funny narrators of the book; See the cover pic? Lydia (blond curls) is a girl who wants to get the main part in the school musical. But there are more popular girls who run away with that part everytime, so the girls try to get Lydia the perfect audition song. She lives with her divorced mom and her gothic sister Melody.
Julia is more like a shy girl who observes everything, and lives with her two dads (Daddy and Papa Dad), she is also the girl who makes all the drawings in the notebook.
They start a notebook, which they call the popularity papers, where they both write and illustrate their life with popular people at school and embarrassing behaving family members surround them.
The Popularity Papers is an amazing childrens book, full of super creativity which burst of the pages. The book is written like Lydia and Julie wrote it by hand, which is just a great way to read it and makes it really funny. The story is just perfect and hilarious, full of amazing side characters, like the new kid in school Roland Asbjornsen (from Norway, with a line through the O in his name..), Lydia's weird goth sister, Julie's two dads, nosy librarians, popular classmates(who all have their own weird thing, discover the girls..) and real friends.
Amy Ignatow is an amazing talented writer and illustrator for children. Certainly one of the most original children's books I have ever read, I hope this book will be very popular!
